The juke-box is a word that you sometimes wonder about. Why is a juke-box called so? Apparently the term jook was used by blacks in America, a word borrowed from a West African language meaning 'disorderly' , 'wicked'. Later on, the word was used to refer to jook-houses which were roadside cafes/bars where they played music. This usage led to the machine that was invented later being called Juke-Box. Now that the origin of the word is out of the way, I was wondering today about whether people play music on a juke-box simply because they want to listen to a particular. Perhaps they do , but sometimes you do use the juke-box as an instrument to impose your musical tastes on other people. Just like cultures try to impose themselves on others. So really what all countries and civilizations do is really play the juke-box. The romans played the juke-box and now the americans are doing the juke-boxing!...
- Just another randomthought that came up while I was playing Sultans of Swing at a coffee shop juke-box with coupons that I thought were free but weren't. The guy just came over and handed me one and charged me for it!
